Notes
for Joseph Augustus Newberry:
Newberry Cemetery Location: In an email dated 25 Jan 2004
from Warren B. Newberry, descendant, "My wife and I spent some time in
locating this site where my great grandfather and family are buried. We
eventually found it with the assistance of June Tuck, a local cemetery
historian in Sulphur Springs. ~ It is located on
county road 3558 which intersects Highway 71 as one approaches Sulphur Bluff from the west. The town water tank is
situated at this intersection. The site is 1.4 miles in a northerly direction
on the right side of the road just beyond the intersection of county roads 3558
and 3628 (.4 miles) It is on private land and a
"new" brick house is at the only entrance to the property. The
cemetery is enclosed with a chain link fence which I am told was erected by my
father, Vinton and uncle Coy Veasy, back in the mid
1980s. It is currently overgrown with trees and brush and we hope to clear it
very soon."
Joseph Augustus moved to Texas in 1861 but interestingly on the
Coahoma County, MS 1860 census...he had a daughter that had been born in TX. I suspect
it was on a visit to see his dad. After the war, JA moved to Sulphur Bluff, Hopkins
County, Texas and is
buried on a dairy farm there. He became a Methodist preacher after the war. JA
eventually took the oath so that he could vote but brother
Issac never would.
Military: CSA: Joseph
and brother Isaac both enlisted in the 18th Texas
Infantry in early 1862. He enlisted using his initials "J.A". Joseph
was captured twice during the war and finally released in 1864 in New Orleans. From the
National Archives Confederate War Records: Pvt. J.A. Newberry (1862-1864): On
May 6, 1862, J.A. enlisted in the Confederacy at Coffeeville, Texas.
(His brother, Isaac did as well) He joined for a three year stint in W.B. Ochiltree's Regiment Texas Volunteers-Eighteenth Texas
Infantry. He was 26 years old. The men from Coffeeville made up Company H. The
18th Texas
spent its entire career within the Trans-Mississippi Department. J.A. was
captured twice during the war. Both times the captures occurred in Louisiana. The first
capture was at the first main railhead west of Vicksburg
in a little town named Richmond,
LA. He was captured on June 15,
1863 and sent to Alton Military Prison in Alton,
IL. The very next month on July
25th, he was discharged from the prison "on oath". J.A. returned to
his unit because he was captured again at Fort DeRussy
on March 14, 1864. He was held in a prison in New Orleans, LA
until he was exchanged at Red River Landing on July 22, 1864. Unable to ascertain how J.A. was officially discharged. (i.e. paroled, surrendered, released on oath, walked away, or
discharged) Estimate that J.A. participated in approximately eleven
engagements. All of them in Louisiana. Also recently found where
J.A. and his brother Issac served a bit in Company C
of the
30 Texas Cavalry, Gurley's Regiment, 1st Texas Partisans.
Following
is from a two page family history done by Albert Leon Newberry. It doesn't
offer a lot of numerical information but it is interesting: "Joseph
Augustus Newberry and Susan Logan were married in DeSoto
or Cohoma County Mississippi around 1858. They moved
to (were in) Texas ( in
1860), as the census indicated that Estelle was born in Texas. However, they returned to Mississippi by the time
of the 1860 census. ~ He enlisted in the Confederate Army during the Civil War
and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi. He was carried
north to a prisoner-of war camp and remained there for some time. A smallpox
epidemic broke out in the camp and many of the prisoners died. Joseph was
indentured to a coffin maker for the remainder of the war. At the close of the
war, the coffin maker gave him a complete set of carpenter tools. ~ During the
time he was a prisoner, his wife Susan moved her small children and two negro servants to Coffeeville,
Texas. They lived there until
around 1882 when they moved to the community of Sulphur
Bluff in Hopkins
county. ~ Dad was about 4 years old at that time. He
recalled that their camp at Sulphur Bluff was located
on one of the cattle trails leading from Texas
to the railhead in Kansas.
Their camp was protected by a log stockade fence, and was often surrounded by
huge droves of longhorn cattle. The cattle were dangerous and would attack any
one on foot. One day a cowboy's horse fell and the longhorns started to
attack him. The other cowboys fired their pistols just in front of the leading
steer's nose to stop him. They then helped the cowboy onto the horse with one
of them and then left there in a hurry. ~ Susan and Augustus planned to make
the run into Oklahoma
when that state was opened for settlement, but for some reason they remained Sulphur Bluff. Perhaps their large blackland
farm proved too good to leave. ~ Sometime in his early life, Augustus had
studied for the ministry. During his stay at Sulphur
Bluff, he was a farmer and rode circuit as a Methodist minister. He and Susan,
plus some of the children (exact number unknown) are buried in a small family
plot in the Sulphur Bluff community. His second wife
is buried in the Hopewell
Cemetery in Franklin
County, Texas.
