Note: Working with the Newberrys in Northeast Texas is like grabbing a
tiger by its tail. There appears to be at least five separate branches of the NEWBERRY
tree, that migrated to this area by 1885.

In the probable mix are: These Cumberland County N.C.  NEWBERRYs (The Thames Connections),
Pike County, Alabama NEWBERRYS (My Sarah Elizabeth NEWBERRY/Alfred NEWSOM family),
Wilcox County, NEWBURYs/NEWBERRYs (James F. and Margaret "Maggie" VAUGHN Newberry)
Clay County, Alabama NEWBERRYs (Francis Marion and Elizabeth HOLT Newberry descendants)
A few who I think descend from Irish Immigrant Samuel NEWBERRY

Descendants of William and Mary Eliza WILKERSON Newberry
of Cumberland County, North Carolina

(53-??) William NEWBERRY        [F01]  -   Record Added : 17 Feb 2003
- Comment: The closest match for this William to a William on my files, is a William NEWBERRY born 1807 Cumberland County, North Carolina to Isaac and Martha JACKSON Newberry who are descendants of the NEWBERRY/THAMES line of North Carolina, as shown on my Monroe County, Alabama Newberrys web page. At this time, 21 Feb 2003, niether I nor Walter Gabennesch, a man who I believe to be THE most knowledgeable genealogist regarding this line, see anything that would dispute that these are the same William Newberrys. Do remember though, we have no proof that they are the same person.
- Born: 1808/09 Cumberland County, North Carolina
- Died: probably after 1870 in Coffeeville, Upshur County, Texas.
- Comment(1): Moved from Cumberland County, NC to Mississippi sometime between 1833 and 1835
- Census: A William M. NEWBERRY was enumerated in the 1840 Desoto County, Mississippi Federal Census as: Wm M. Newberry with;
Males: 0-5,1 ; 5-10,1 ; 10-15,1 20-30,2 ; 30-40,1 Females: 0-5,2 ; 10-15,2 ; 20-30,1 - 4 in agriculture
- Comment: Because of the William James Newberry and Augustus Newberry Land Grant below this descendancy, I will note that there were no NEWBERRYs enumerated in the 1850 Pontotoc County, Mississippi Federal census.
- Census: Enumerated in the 1850 Desoto County, Mississippi Federal census.
- Census: William moved to Texas before the Civil War and appears in the 1860 Federal Census of Upshur County, Coffeeville District, of Texas.
- Census: Enumerated in the 1870 Federal census Upshur County, Texas, Coffeeville District. William is still farming.  Sons Issac and John still living at home.
- Married Mary Eliza WILKERSON Newberry about 1832 in North Carolina, probably Cumberland County

(54-01) William J. NEWBERRY         [F01]  -   Record Added : 19 Feb 2003
- Born: 1832/33 in Cumberland County, North Carolina

(54-02) Rev. Joseph Augustus NEWBERRY         [F01]  -   Record Added : 17 Feb 2003
- Born: 18 Jul 1835 in Mississippi
- Died: 22 Nov 1895 in Texas
- Buried: Newberry Cemetery, Sulphur Bluff, Hopkins County, Texas
- Census: Enumerated in the 1860 Coahoma County, MS Census.
- Comment: [F01]  J.A. had married a girl from Kentucky, Susan Logan.  Their newborn is noted as having been born in TX.  The girl was named Estelle.  A housemate was living with them, probably Susan's sister,  Lidia Logan.
- Census: Enumerated in the 1880 Federal Census of Upshur County, Texas ; Farmer ; age 44
- Comment:  [F01] Joseph Augustus moved to Texas in 1861 but interestingly on the Coahoma County, MS 1860 census...he had a daughter that had been born in TX. I suspect it was on a visit to see his dad. After the war, JA moved to Sulphur Bluff, Hopkins County, Texas and is buried on a dairy farm there. He became a Methodist preacher after the war. JA eventually took the oath so that he could vote but brother Issac never would. Joseph had a set of twin boys when he returned and one became my great grand. My wife and I just had a set of twin boys (the first in her family and the first since my civil war ancestor on my side) so I named one Buckner (wife's maiden name) Augustus Newberry.
- Military: CSA:  [F01] Joseph and brother Isaac both enlisted in the 18th Texas Infantry in early 1862. He enlisted using his initials "J.A".  Joseph was captured twice during the war and finally released in 1864 in New Orleans. From the National Archives Confederate War Records: Pvt. J.A. Newberry (1862-1864):  On May 6, 1862, J.A. enlisted in the Confederacy at Coffeeville, Texas.  (His brother, Isaac did as well)  He joined for a three year stint in W.B. Ochiltree's Regiment Texas Volunteers-Eighteenth Texas Infantry.  He was 26 years old.  The men from Coffeeville made up Company H.   The 18th Texas spent its entire career within the Trans-Mississippi Department.   J.A. was captured twice during the war.  Both times the captures occurred in Louisiana.  The first capture was at the first main railhead west of Vicksburg in a little town named Richmond, LA.  He was captured on June 15, 1863 and sent to Alton Military Prison in Alton, IL.  The very next month on July 25th, he was discharged from the prison "on oath".  J.A. returned to his unit because he was captured again at Fort DeRussy on March 14, 1864.  He was held in a prison in New Orleans, LA until he was exchanged at Red River Landing on July 22, 1864.  I have been unable to ascertain how J.A. was officially discharged.  (i.e. paroled, surrendered, released on oath, walked away, or discharged) By my estimation,  J.A. participated in approximately eleven engagements. All of them in Louisiana. Also recently found where J.A. and his brother Issac served a bit in Company C of the 30 Texas Cavalry, Gurley's Regiment, 1st Texas Partisans.

This 14 Aug 1838 Pontotoc County, Mississippi Land Grant may apply to these Newberrys.

William James and Augustus Newberry may be brothers. If this William James NEWBERRY is the father of Joseph Augustus NEWBERRY, then we may now know where "Augustus" comes from, at least in relationship to Joseph Augustus NEWBERRY.

F01: Email exchanges with Bradley D Newberry, descendant; beginning 17 Feb 2003. Brad had based his research mostly on information passed on to him from Louie Wayne "Pug" Newberry and stories from his parents. Brad and Pug had combined information from family bibles, cemetery data, census data, and family lore as passed on in conversations with family members.
F20: Hickory Grove Cemetery: This cemetery appears to be located about 12 miles west-southwest of Paris, Lamar County, Texas. If my resources are correct, one should take US Hwy 82 west from Paris, Texas and go about 10 miles to a small community called Petty Texas. Should you reach Honey Grove Texas, you've gone about 5 miles too far! At Petty Texas you should go south on Texas Road FM-137. At this point you should be within 5 miles of the cemetery. The cemetery appears to be near the intersection of FM-137 and FM-824. The U.S. Geological Survey shows the location as: Latitude:333307N ; Longitude: 0954851W

These appear to be descendants of Alexander NEWBURY/NEWBERRY and Annas HARDY both born around 1707 in Ballyhaise, County Craven Ireland, whose known descendants have BROYLES connections. They immigrated about 1765 and settled in West-Fallowfield Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1768 they joined a wagon train and moved to Rowan County, North Carolina. They appear to have moved to Green County, Tennessee around 1800. Descendants migrated to Jackson County, Alabama, Franklin County, Tennessee, Lincoln County, Tennessee and later generations to Green, Conway, and Pulaski County, Arkansas. More information on this line, excluding the ones in the census data above, can be found in Appendix 10 of the book, "Newberry Family and In-Laws" by Grant Harold Collar Jr and published in 1989.

Wife: Martha CALHOUN Newberry
- Parents: Giles Bowers CALHOUN born 1819/20 and Mary F IRVINE  : Giles B. Calhoun (1819/20-July 1892) and Mary F. IRVINE Calhoun (1820-1894) married in about 1840 in Tennessee.  The Calhoun's moved to Red River County Texas in about 1860. Mary died at Clarksville, Texas about six weeks after her child Florence was born, she is buried in the Old City Cemetery. Giles sold his Manchester, Tennessee land and moved to Lamar County Texas. He settled near the Seven Mile Creek, a little southeast of Paris Golf and Country Club, Blossen Community. He married a second time to a women named Neal, she has a son, Jim, from a previous marriage. Giles and Neal had three children, Letha, Billy and Percy, they owned a shoe store in Paris, Texas. The Calhouns were believed to be originally from Scotland or Ireland. The elder Calhoun came to this country and worked three years or so before sending for his family. The Calhoun's lived in Florence, Tennessee, where they owned and lived on a large plantation. The Calhoun's had many slaves, and were growers of tobacco. (James W. Booth, a grandson said the plantation was in Alabama.) The family fled their home in Tennessee due to a misunderstanding with the federal government over a tobacco tax. They said the slaves begged to come with them but the Calhouns said they were in enough trouble and they could not ride with them but could follow on foot at their own will. It is not known if the slaves came to Texas. It is believed they moved during or just before the Civil War.

THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL and Nancy W. TRANTHAM Newberry

This is definately a work in progress in its infancy!
This descendancy placed on this web page due to a possibility that
they may be related to the Red River Texas NEWBERRYs above.

The descendancy below is my attempt to put together all the data gleaned mostly from
Internet Web Sites, Internet Posts, and emails from one descendant.

The is a signifiacant amount of discrepancy data, especially relating to Lee or Levi NEWBERRY and
his date of birth. Because of all the corresponding matching data relating to Lee/Levi NEWBERRY, I do
believe that all this information DOES relate to the same person and his family.

This is my best guess at this Families Ancestry!

Corrections and updates will be appreciated.

FACTS ABOUT THIS FAMILY
Excerpts from emails starting April 2003, received from Lynn Weinert

(1)  I am looking for my great grandfather Lee Newberry married to Sarah Francis Karl about 1894 in Texas. They had one daughter Blanche Newberry and a son who died at age three. Lee had four daughters from a previous marriage. He was born in Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas and owned land near Baird Texas, that is where my grandmother was born.

(2)  I had four great aunts, Maude, Esther,Lessie Moon(married name), and Nola, one of these ladys married a man with oil wells... They were from Levi's first marriage.

(3)  Names I heard while I was growing up: Robert E Lee (they lived in Kansas) he invented the bobby pin or something like that, JC Wilson, these were relatives but am not sure from which side. But I do know they were all originally from TEXAS.

(4)  You need to know that my grandmother (Blanche Newberry) did not like her father much....she said she had to work the farm and pick cotton, that was why her back was so bad. She also said that he and someone else use to run over prarie dogs for fun...so he was mean. Her mother Sarah Francis Karl dropped dead from a stroke on the kitchen floor when she was not very old, my grandmother said from over work...they lived in Texas and that is where I believe she died. I heard a story that my Great Grandmother buried hams in the ground to keep from the soldiers, in Tenn. I believe. When it got hot the oil made spots on the ground and their ham stash was discovered.

(5)  One more thing, the name Boothe is familiar from somewhere way back, yes I know that name, give me time to let it run around in my brain for awhile and it should pop up sometime soon I hope. Maybe Jessie Booth ??? I thought it was Samuel Newberry from the info you sent me???  If we can find the descendants of the other girls (great Aunts) then we will find the rest of the story. I have a torn corner of and envelope that says,  Mrs. Birda Farrington -- Nola's daughter. Address 3407 Ramsey Ave. Dallas Texas 75266 or 16.

Samuel NEWBERRY and Nancy W. TRANTHAM Marriage License Issued 25 Sep 1844 Weakley County, Tennessee
Moved to Green County, Arkansas in about 1859. Samuel born 15 Aug 1822 in North Carolina and died 17 Feb 1874
in Green County, Arkansas. Nancy born 24 Jul 1823 and died 09 Jan 1885 Green County Arkansas. Nancy was the
daughter of Floyd TRANTHAM born 1796/7 in South Carolina. They lived in the Friendship Township, post office
Gainesville, Arkansas where Samuel was a foreman of a company of loggers. They are both buried at HARTSOE Cemetery.
They may have had as many as 11 children, but only six were known to Grant Collar at the time of his publishing of
his book "Newberry Family and In-Laws" in 1989. To the seven children Grant lists in his book, we can add
Mary(1847/8-TN) listed in the above 1850 census data, to those Grant Listed. Grant's children came from the
1870 Green County, Arkansas census and by adding Mary we have:
Samuel NEWBERRY (b1822-NC)
 +Nancy TRANTHAM Newberry (b1823-TN)
    Mary NEWBERRY (b1847/8-TN)
    John W NEWBERRY(b1848/9-TN)
William C NEWBERRY(b1852-TN-listed as 6th child by Goodspeed)

     +James D. MARKHAM(b1846/7)
    Levi B NEWBERRY(b1859/60-AR)
     +Alice L WOOD(b1859/60)
Also mentioned as possible relations:
Mamie Newberry(1878/9) who married Ollie C CRUMPTOM(1876/7) living in Paragould, Arkansas when married
Minnie NEWBERRY married G.B. BROWN (listed in Green County Arkansas marriages, era 1870-1900 - no other info)
The above is a summary of the data I have on this family, which mostly came from the 1989 book
by Grant Harold Collar Jr., "Newberry Family and In-Laws", which showed as one of it's sources,

More on the Family of Nancy TRANTHAM Newberry above:
[A lot of the Information below duplicates information above.]

Found on LDS ancestral records:
Sarah Francis KARL born 04 Mar 1863, Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee, died 04 Feb 1914, married about 1894 Lee or Levie ByBasal[???] NEWBERRY born about Feb 1860, Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas, died 04 Mar 1919.

[Lee or Levie ByBasal NEWBERRY seems to match Levi B NEWBERRY in this data.]

More on the Family of Samuel and Nancy TRANTHAM Newberry: Source = Appendix 4 of the 1989 book NEWBERRY FAMILY AND IN-LAWS by Grant Harold Collar Jr. There are two full pages of info on this line of NEWBERRYS in Grant's book. Some excerpts are below:

Nancy - Nancy W. TRANTHAM born 24 Jul 1823 (by subtraction) in Tennessee, died 09 Jan 1885 (aged 61 yrs 5 months 16 days) in Green County, Arkansas. Her husband was a Samuel NEWBERRY born 15 Aug 1822 in North Carolina and died 17 Feb 1874, Green County Arkansas. Both buried Hartsoe Cemetery, Green County, Arkansas.

  2.Clifton NEWBERRY
  3.Charley NEWBERRY
  4.Tuler NEWBERRY
3.Thomas Robert NEWBERRY born 1853/4 TN married Narcissus ______
4.Ephraim Haust NEWBERRY born 1855-9 TN married Anna M. McELWEE
5.Levi B. NEWBERRY born 1859-60 Greene County, Ark who married Alice L WOOD 28 Dec 1881. [SEN-2003; Appears to have married(2) Sarah Francis KARL born 04 Mar 1863, Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee, died 04 Feb 1914.]
6.Vashiti NEWBERRY born 4 Dec 1858 (by subtraction)

Probable Grandchildren of Samuel and Nancy TRANTHAM Newberry:

Mamie NEWBERRY who married Ollie C CRUMPTON
Minnie NEWBERRY who married G.B. BROWN

{The details on this family come from Grant Harold Collar's 1989 book, "NEWBERRY FAMILY AND IN-LAWS", Appendix 4, (2 pages) still available from Grant Collar for about 40 dollars - see may Notice on my main genealogy web page.}

I am replying to your board message. The proper name for Levi boswell was in fact Levi Borwell. According to his Ggrandaughter Doris L. Roberts who is living. My current info stops at Nancy W. Trantham, and on the Newberry side ends with Floyd Newberry. My husband's side goes something like this - Nola Roberta Newberry married James McCoy Hendricks, and Nola's father was Samuel Newberry who married Nancy W. Trantham, Samuel's father was Floyd Newberry, and that's where my info stops, until I ran onto your message. If I can give you anything like dates, etc on those who followed Nola R. Newberry I'd be happy to do so. Regards, Roberta J. Hayward Hendricks.

Hi Lera, I wanted to tell you before I shut this down for a while that I ran across something very interesting yesterday. Samuel Newberry purchased land in Newberry Co, SC, in what was known as Indian Creek, Newberry Co, SC. It was a large tract appearing on pgs 19,20,21 & 22 of the plat map book for Newberry Co, SC. It laid along a river upon which the settlement of Indian Creek was located. Isn't that interesting ? Regards, Roberta

Hi, I am a ggranddaughter by marriage to Nola Roberta Newberry married to James McCoy Hendricks. Nola was daughter of Levi Borwell (not Boswell) Newberry & wife Alice Leota Wood. At this time I know only that Levi's father was Samuel Newberry and his wife was Nancy Trantham. We have a lot on Nancy but nothing more on Samuel. And at this time nothing on Alice L. Wood. I have not as yet explored these individuals but do have info on from James McCoy Hendricks, and up, also much on the Hendricks, Nunnally, and Major lines. Anything I can do or share just let me know. Regards, Roberta Jean Hayward Hendricks, husband James Edward Hendricks Jr.

Hi Lera, My name is Roberta Hendricks, I was the one who wrote that the name is Levi Borwell, not boswell Hendricks. My husband's aunt and his father are both quite sure of that. But the reason I'm writing today is that you had wondered who Samuel Newberry's father was it was Floyd Newberry b: 1796 in SC. I believe it was Pickens Co, SC, but I wouldn't swear to that right now. At any rate he can be easily found via the Ancestry.com web site. On that web site you can go in with the info on Samuel and pick up his mother as well as Floyd Newberry or you can go in under Floyd. Either one will work. I hope this has been of some help to you. We come down thru Ester's sister Nola Roberta Newberry. Did you know that there are a large number of people who came down from that marriage ? We alone have 15 grandchildren and 2 ggrandchildren. Regards, Roberta
